The hundredth day of school is coming up soon for many of us, and if you are like me, you probably spend a whole WEEK celebrating it, because there are SO MANY NO PREP, FUN THINGS TO DO! And the great thing is that the activities are not simply fun; they are also great for number sense, place value, and mathematical thinking in general that there is really no reason to limit the celebration to just one day. So here is a list of all of the different Hundreds Day ideas that I have ever done- or at least that I can remember!
The Hundreds Day Collection
Is there anyone that does NOT ask their students to bring in a collection of one hundred things? I think that this is a great thing for children to do with their parents! The only thing that I don’t like is when children tell me that their MOMS did all of the counting after the child went to bed, or something along those lines. (Grrrrr….) Anyway, to help parents understand what we are looking for, I started taking photos of some of the best collections, made a collage of them, and then sent this home with the children along with a note explaining that the children needed to bring in a collection of one hundred items. It seemed to help a lot! Feel free to grab the photo below and send it to parents with your hundreds day notes!
Hundreds Day Hats
This Hundreds Day hat is a classic! You can grab this free download here.
Here is also another type of Hundreds Day Hat. This one was more work, but much more meaningful! It’s just a band around the head, but with ten paper strips on it with ten stamps on each strip of paper. Therefore, there are one hundred stamps on the hat. I don’t seem to have the exact dimensions of the hat anymore, but I do remember that we used a paper fastener to hold the strips of paper together at the top! The words on the top said, “I’m 100 Days Smarter!”
The Counting to 100 Song
This song is a great way to get kids to practice counting to one hundred, and it’s practically the THEME SONG for the hundredth day of school, too! You can get it on our newest animated DVD Number Jumble, or on our DVD or CD Jumpin’ Numbers and Shakin’ Shapes. You can see my class from 2012 performing it below!
The Pattern of the Hundreds Chart Song
Another really GREAT song is the Pattern of the Hundreds Chart on our new, animated Musical Math Vol. TWO DVD! I LOVE this because it explains exactly how the chart comes together in a pattern.
One Hundred Exercises
Here is another classic hundreds day activity! Just find ten different exercises and do each one ten times. So for example, do ten jumping jacks, ten toe touches, ten sit ups, ten arm circles, ten hops on the right foot, ten hops on the left, etc. When you’re done, you’ll have done 100 exercises!
Make One Hundred Dots
Here is a fun thing to do: simply give the children a copy of this page with one hundred dots on it. Then let them make a dot on top of each existing dot. When they are done, they will have made one hundred dots! We used bingo bottles for this, and I had my higher Kindergartners also write the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. on the side margins as well. I have no idea who gave me this master originally because there is no copyright on it! I guess it’s okay to share it, since it’s just a paper with tiny dots on it, anyway. You can download my copy here.
One Hundred Stickers
I once inherited a huge box FILLED WITH STICKERS when a packrat teacher unexpectedly retired. I really had no idea what I was going to do with so many, but being a packrat teacher myself, I took them! Anyhow, I had the idea of letting each child choose one hundred stickers and laying them down in sets of ten on a big piece of construction paper! OH, BOY! The kids LOVED this! The hardest part for the kids was actually choosing which stickers they wanted- and for some of them, peeling the stickers off of their backing! It’s really pretty good fine motor practice pulling those stickers off! I did have to draw ten boxes on the construction paper for them, though.
Hundreds Day Trail Mix
This is one of my favorite activities! All you need to do is get ten small snacks that the kids will enjoy and put them in ten bowls. Then get some zip bags and put their names on them in advance. After that, you’re all set. Just have the kids count ten pieces of each snack into their bags. When they are done, they’ll have one hundred snacks, or what I like to call One Hundreds Day Trail Mix! Here are some of the snacks I have purchased for this activity: goldfish crackers, pretzels, peanuts (unless there are allergies,) raisins, Cheerios, Froot Loops, MnMs, tiny Ritz crackers, Cheetos, mini marshmallows, etc.
Hundreds Day Writing
After the kids have done the trail mix, it’s pretty easy to get them to write, “I can eat 100 _____.” They can also usually write, “I can hold 100 _____.” If you have done the exercises, they can write, “I can do 100 _______.” I encourage the children to sound out the last word in each sentence, at least.
Hundred Year Old Person
This is always fun! You just have the kids make an art project with themselves as a one hundred year old person! I had my kids crumple up the paper before painting it to make the skin all wrinkly. We used corks dipped in gray paint for the hair! LOL!
Old F–t Booth App
Please excuse the inappropriate name of this app, but it’s so much fun that I just HAD to include it! In any case, it’s FREE! All you have to do is take a picture of each child, and then use the app to change the child into a very old man or woman, adding accessories. I also printed them out and put them on the wall. SO FUNNY! I found this app last year, so these photos are of my first and second grade combo class. Second grade usually doesn’t celebrate the hundredth day, but since the first graders were celebrating, I decided the let the seconds come along for the ride.
The One Hundred Cup Challenge
This is another really fun activity that the kids really LOVED! Just give them 100 cups, and have them make the tallest tower that they can. I did this for the first time with my first and second graders last year, and posted this photo on my Instagram account!

I hope that you found a few new ideas here that you can use! Are there some ideas that you would like to add? Let’s hear them!
