First, let’s review again what the Dolch Lists are. The Dolch Word List is a list of frequently used words in the English Language. Edward William Dolch compiled this list of words in 1936, based on his research of children’s literature of his time. He basically counted and tallied up all of the words most commonly used in children’s books to figure out which words children would find the most often when reading. That way, teachers would know what to focus on! When he was done, he wound up with a list of 220 “high frequency words,” or “sight words” that children would need to know “on sight” (or without sounding out) in order to read fluently. He decided to exclude the nouns and put them in a separate list of 95 words. You can download these words here, opens in a new tab! You can download the list of Dolch Words here, opens in a new tab.

Get it? We have found that most teachers use either the regular or Dolch “basic” list, or the Dolch lists in which the words are ordered by difficulty in order to teach the sight words, so we wanted to provide both!
